'Rapidly melting' Slough ice rink closed

A Berkshire ice rink will be closed for at least two weeks because the ice is "rapidly melting".

Slough Borough Council said a main pipe at the town's Absolutely Ice arena had sprung a leak, meaning the temperature of the ice pad could not be maintained.

A spokeswoman said the fault meant there were safety concerns for anyone using the ice.

She said engineers were working around the clock to rectify the problem, which could take two weeks or longer to fix.

The council's assistant director of culture and skills, Andrew Stevens, said: "We are very sorry to have to close the ice arena but we have had to do this to ensure the safety of everyone who uses it.

"The problem with the ice melting is clearly very serious and though we hope to be able to reopen in a week or two, we apologise in advance if it takes longer."
