Duchess of Cambridge returns to St Andrew's School

The Duchess of Cambridge has returned to her old school in Berkshire to meet students and teachers.

Catherine studied at St Andrew's School in Pangbourne from 1986 until 1995.

Deputy Head Richard Hudson, who taught her English and religious studies, said it was an "exciting" visit for teachers and pupils.

A spokesman for the Duchess said: "She was invited to go back and was very keen to do so. It's the first time in many years she has been there."

The Duchess joined pupils for St Andrew's Day, which the school traditionally marks with a day of activities.

She was to meet teachers and students at a private lunch, visit the pre-prep school for under-fives and open a new playing field.

Mr Hudson described Catherine as very "sporty" during her time at the school.

He added: "She held our record for the high jump... for about 20 years she's had that.

"She was very hard working, very polite and friendly, [and] very kind to the younger children."

Catherine joined the school at four years old when her family returned to West Berkshire in 1986 after spending two-and-a-half years in Jordan.

She was predominantly a day girl but boarded for part of the week in her later years.
