Mystery Sonning Bridge postbox to be removed in revamp

Work on the bridge is due to start on Monday

A postbox facade which mysteriously appeared on a bridge is to be removed during renovation work.

The red letterbox was placed on a buttress on the downstream side of Sonning Bridge, which crosses the River Thames in Sonning, Berkshire.

Resident Uri Geller was bemused by its appearance. The person responsible for placing the item has not come forward.

It will be removed when protective barriers are installed and a traffic light system is improved.

The bridge has Grade II status which means any alterations must be agreed with Wokingham Borough Council as the planning authority.

It is not yet known what will happen to the postbox facade.

Wokingham councillor Keith Baker says work on the bridge is due to begin on Monday.

The 16th Century crossing will be shut between 09:30 GMT and 16:00 on weekdays until 11 November, although the timings might be adjusted if too much disruption is caused.

The Grade II listed bridge will reopen on weekends.
