Sue Ryder Grief Kind sessions, like this one in Bourne, give people a safe space to share their feelings following a bereavement

Charity-run bereavement support sessions have been launched in Reading.

The Grief Kind Space is set to open at 10:00 GMT, offering in-person drop in sessions run by trained Sue Ryder volunteers.

They will run every Wednesday between 10:00 and 12:00 at Sheeplands Garden Centre.

The sessions will help reduce the isolation and loneliness felt by many people following a bereavement, the charity said.

People often feel like they are a "burden" when speaking about their grief to friends and family, said Amanda Dean from Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospital.

"Our Grief Kind Spaces help remove that feeling, so people can talk, listen to others who might be experiencing the same as them, and gain support," she said.

The sessions provide a safe, informal and supportive place for people to come together and share their experiences, the charity said.

The launch of the Reading scheme follows the success of similar sessions in nearby Thatcham, where volunteer Val Buckland said people were "more than just attendees, they are friends".

"I know a lot of people feel less lonely because of the group," she added.

Another volunteer, Ed Grehan, said the sessions were good for attendees' confidence.

"People who have never been able to talk about their feelings are able to express themselves," he said.

As the scheme expands, the charity is on the look-out for more volunteers.

Full training will be given and no previous experience or qualifications are required.

Mr Grehan said being a Grief Kind Spaces volunteer was very fulfilling.

"Knowing I have helped to make a difference to someone's life is why I enjoy volunteering," he said.
