A car park next to a primary school has been fenced off after a large sinkhole appeared in the ground.

The hole at East Park Farm Car Park in Charvil, Berkshire, was discovered on Monday morning, according to the parish council.

It is about two metres (6.5ft) deep and one metre (3.2ft) wide.

Inspection crews have been asked to survey the area before deciding whether the car park can be partially reopened while repairs are awaited.

Parents of pupils at Charvil Piggott Primary School, who often park on the site for drop-offs and pick-ups, have been urged to seek alternative arrangements.

David Corringham, the school's premises manager, said: "It's all just sand down there, there's no real bedrock or anything - it looks like it's been washed away.

"We've had all the school kids coming in this morning wondering if there's buried treasure in the car park."

Staff from the school grounds team have been supervising the area, ensuring members of the public do not get too close.

The land is owned by Wokingham Borough Council, which has been approached for comment.
