Reading train station subway cycling ban to be lifted
- Published
Cyclists will soon be able to use a subway that passes beneath Reading's railway station.
Riders are currently required to dismount to use the shortcut between the station's north and south entrances.
Reading Borough Council said it plans to begin ceiling works in February that will allow bikes to pass through.
The upgrade will require some subway closures but disabled users will be able to continue using the route.
Council highways services manager Sam Shean told an access and disabilities working group that people with disabilities would be provided with passes to use the subway throughout the works, which have recently been approved by Network Rail.
Contractors are establishing a programme which will include limiting closures to keep the subway open as much as possible, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
A council spokesperson said: "We hope to be able to confirm plans in January with the aim of work starting by the end of February."
In a consultation held by the council, 73% of respondents were in favour of letting cyclists ride through the underpass.
