Windsor: Hundreds of homes agreed in regeneration plan

Plans to replace four blocks of flats in Windsor with more than 400 homes have been agreed.

Councillors approved proposals for the regeneration of Sawyers Close, including the demolition of the 1960s buildings on the site.

Four eight-storey blocks will be replaced with 413 homes - nine blocks of between five and eight storeys, along with seven rows of town houses.

A total of 365 parking spaces and 654 cycle storage units are also proposed.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) officers' report said 30% of homes would be affordable.

Abri, a registered housing provider, indicated its intention for all residential units to be affordable in time, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Councillor Helen Price, who was not on the deciding committee, said the existing blocks were "well past their sell-by date".

"Abri is finding it a real challenge to keep up with repairs, and the living conditions for residents are just not acceptable," she said.

Stephen Lodge of Abri said: "Over the past couple of years, we have worked closely with the community at Sawyers Close, with their local councillors and with officers at RBWM to make sure that what we plan to deliver meets the future needs of our customers."
