A computer glitch that left a hospital trust's system out of action has been fixed but people are still being urged to avoid using accident and emergency.

The problem affecting the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in Reading started on Thursday.

It meant staff had to use pen and paper to admit and discharge patients.

The trust is urging those with non life-threatening issues to use other services to help ease pressures at the Royal Berkshire.

People should seek help at local pharmacies, NHS 111 and the Urgent Care Centre in Reading's Broad Street Mall.

The trust added due to strike action between 20-23 December some appointments may need to be changed.

It said patients affected would be contacted: "If you have not heard from us, you should come in as planned for your appointment," a statement said.
