A 99-home development could be built in a town despite concerns about its impact on the character of the area.

An outline planning application was approved by councillors of the Maidenhead development management committee, external for land south of Bray Lake in Maidenhead, Berkshire,

The site was taken out of the Green Belt in the local plan.

A report said the plans had been "found to be acceptable" despite concerns it could impact the "scenic view".

Councillor Suzanne Cross, who was not on the deciding committee at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council, said: "This proposal will significantly impact the character of the area - it introduces three-storey flats where there are none today.

"Additionally, this section of land is the sole open green space that is visible from the A308 between the Braywick Roundabout and the Fifield Road - offering a scenic view enjoyed by residents and visitors."

Despite abstaining on the vote, Councillor Leo Walters described the plans as "quite unnecessary".

Homes at the site, north-east of Windsor Road, would include a combination of flats and houses - 40% of which would be affordable.

The officers' report reads: "The layout is considered appropriate with regards to the height, form, scale and appearance of the buildings. While the impact on living conditions of future occupants and existing residential properties in the surrounding area has been found to be acceptable."

According to the report, 36 of the homes would have three beds, 11 would have four beds and 12 would have five beds - representing a mix of detached and semi-detached buildings.

The affordable homes would see six one-bed flats, 12 two-bed flats, 11 three-bed houses and one four-bed house.

In addition, there would be 229 car parking spaces, including 218 that would be allocated and 11 visitor spaces.
