West Berkshire Council is considering the future of Willows Edge Care Home in Newbury

A consultation on plans to close a council-run care home or transfer it to an external provider is due to end on Thursday.

West Berkshire Council is considering the future of Willows Edge Care Home in Newbury as it aims to cut £14m from its 2024/25 budget.

As well as slashing social care costs, the authority is considering cuts to park maintenance and grass cutting.

Parking charges could also increase under the plans.

Residents have until 11 January to comment on a number of cost-cutting proposals, which can be found on the council's Consultation and Engagement Hub, external.

The Liberal Democrat administration has said reducing grass cutting frequency would save up to £220,000, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Closing or finding an alternative provider to run Willows Edge Care Home would save up to £240,000.

Changes to adult social care home charges and changes to day care transport are also being proposed.

Financial officers say the authority is facing a £14m funding gap.

Council leader Lee Dillon said: "Councils are required by law to deliver a balanced budget and we cannot spend more money than we have.

"It leaves us facing tough decisions about what we do, or how we do it next year.

"We are prioritising support for the most vulnerable residents and protecting frontline services as far as possible - with most savings being found within the organisation."

The budget will be discussed by the executive on 8 February ahead of a full council meeting on 29 February.
