A teenager was killed by a train shortly after a woman believed to be his mother was found stabbed to death, an inquest heard.
Julian Bracken, 18, was found on a railway track near Pangbourne, Berkshire, at 18:15 GMT on 4 January.
This was about 30 minutes after Mayawati Bracken, 56, was found in a car nearby stabbed in the chest.
Separate inquests into the deaths of the pair have been opened at Berkshire Coroner's Court.
Assistant coroner Alison McCormick said they both lived in the same house in Pangbourne.
The court heard Ms Bracken was found inside a Lexus on the A340 Tidmarsh Road at the junction with Flower's Hill and died of her injuries after receiving medical attention.
Ms Bracken was a housewife and went by the name "Maya", the court heard.
The coroner said: "A post-mortem examination has been carried out and the provisional cause of death is recorded as... shock and haemorrhage due to... stab wound to the chest."
Ms McCormick added that student Mr Bracken was reported to have been seen on the railway tracks and had been hit by a high-speed train.
She told the court a post-mortem examination found the provisional cause of his death to be "multiple injuries".
Full inquests into each of their deaths will be held at a later date.
