Prince Philip marks Edgbaston Cricket Ground revamp

The Duke of Edinburgh has officially opened Edgbaston Cricket Ground after a £32m revamp.

A new stadium has been built and includes a conference and banqueting suite, improved visitor facilities and an extended ground capacity.

Warwickshire County Cricket Club chief executive Colin Povey has said the improvements were needed if it wanted to continue hosting internationals.

Prince Philip unveiled a plaque to mark his visit.

The plans were approved in 2009 and the work has been completed ahead of England playing India at the ground next month.

The new stand means the cricket ground can now host 25,000 fans and, according to cricket club chairman Norman Gascoigne, is now the largest ground other than Lord's in England.
