Birmingham riots: Eight on trial over Bartons Arms shooting

Eight people have gone on trial accused of rioting and of firing guns at police officers in Birmingham.

The six men and two teenagers are accused of planning to a fire-bomb the Bartons Arms pub in Newtown to lure police officers to the nearby A34.

Twelve shots were fired at the police lines on 9 August, during the summer riots, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

The eight deny riot, violent disorder, possession of firearms with intent to endanger life and wreckless arson.

The pub was attacked as part of orchestrated, planned violence, the court heard.

The dual carriageway in and out of the city had been barricaded with tables and chairs taken from the pub.
