Birmingham memorial to fallen police officers unveiled

A memorial to fallen West Midlands Police officers has been officially unveiled.

A total of 89 officers have died while on duty in Birmingham, the Black Country and Coventry since 1822.

Thirty two died in World War II, including eight Coventry officers who were killed during an air raid on 14/15 November 1940.

The memorial has been put up in reception at the force's headquarters, at Lloyd House in Birmingham.

Chief Constable Chris Sims, who was involved in unveiling the memorial, said it "does two things".

He said: "Firstly, it is there to inspire the officers that are serving today.

"Secondly, because this is a public area as well as a private area, it's there as a reminder of the sacrifice that sits at the heart of policing."
