Work on a new £50m dental hospital and school of dentistry will start at Birmingham's Pebble Mill next month.

The site, which will have more than 600 students and trainees, will include research facilities and walk-in emergency dental care.

It is thought the building will open in time for the start of the 2015 autumn term, replacing the existing dental hospital at St Chad's Circus.

Pebble Mill was the site of BBC Birmingham until it closed in 2004.

The development is led by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust together with the University of Birmingham, public and private group Birmingham and Solihull Local Improvement Finance Trust and Calthorpe Estates,

Detailed planning permission for the site was granted in December.

The trust said lead contractor Galliford Try was expected to start on site early in September.
