Birmingham roads to be approved

A pilot scheme to impose 20mph speed limits across Birmingham is expected to be approved despite objections.

The £7m project would see 20mph limits introduced in numerous wards as well as the whole of the city centre inside the ring road.

Out of 3,565 people quizzed about the plans, 58% said they were against it while 39% said they supported it.

Objectors fear it could cause more jams but Birmingham City Council said main roads would not be affected.

The pilot scheme could be in place by March next year if it is approved on Monday.

Aston, Nechells, Ladywood, Edgbaston, Harborne, Selly Oak, Bournville, Moseley, Kings Heath, Springfield, Sparkbrook, South Yardley, Bordesley Green, Washwood Heath and Hodge Hill would all be affected by phase one.

The limits would apply to residential roads, roads with a high number of shop frontages and roads near schools, parks, health centres and leisure centres.
