Canal silt dredging scheme starts in West Midlands

Work has started on a two-year project to dredge sections of several canals in the West Midlands.

The £800,000 work will improve the Daw End branch of the Wyrley and Essington canal near Walsall and the Birmingham Main Line and Rushall canals.

About 7,500 tonnes of silt and other materials that have built up in the canals will be removed, the Canal and Rivers Trust said.

It will either be disposed of or used to protect the canal bank from erosion.
