In pictures: Queen's Baton Relay in Birmingham

The Queen's Baton Relay journeyed through Birmingham on Monday, ahead of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Current and former athletes, including 1994 Commonwealth gold medallist swimmer Adam Ruckwood, took part in the events.

Pupils from a number of city schools gathered to hold the baton in Sunset Park, Ladywood, while dancing and sporting events took place.

There was a patriotic show of St George's flag waving from many of the young people who came to see the relay as it travelled through Birmingham.

Many of the youngsters, including this group of girls, got to see the specially-made baton up close.

Rhythmic gymnast Mimi Cesar, who is waiting to find out if she has made the English Commonwealth Games squad, was one of the day's baton-bearers.

The gymnast took the relay symbol through Ward End park.

The baton was carried past some of Birmingham's most recognisable landmarks, including Selfridges in the Bullring.

And for some who didn't get to hold the real baton, the home-made option was almost as good.
