Nine new speed cameras will be coming to sites in Birmingham and Solihull in the new year.

The seven cameras in Birmingham and two in Solihull will operate for five years.

Birmingham City Council said there would be an initial 21-month evaluation phase to assess the effectiveness of the cameras, equipment and system.

Fixed speed cameras were switched off in the area in 2013 and since then only mobile cameras have been used.

Between 2010 and 2014 there were 2,078 people killed or seriously injured in Birmingham, an average of 416 per year, the council said.

It said the nine sites were chosen based on criteria including there being a history of collisions and casualties at the camera site zone.
