Heavy rain caused a ceiling to collapse and people had to be rescued from flooded vehicles in the West Midlands.

Fire chiefs said a 37-year-old woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the ceiling collapse in Woodlands Street, Smethwick.

A woman and a baby were rescued from a car stuck in floodwater in Icknield Street, Kings Norton, Birmingham, at about 16:45 GMT.

Earlier, parts of the M6 were also shut because of flooding.

The fire service has urged drivers to take extra care in the wet conditions and West Midlands Ambulance Service said it took more than 70 calls about road crashes in 12 hours from 06:00 GMT.

A van got stuck in a ford in Hall Green, Birmingham, and, in a separate incident, Aldridge Blue Watch tweeted they had rescued two people from their car in the town.

Flooding on the M6 northbound between junction eight at the M5 and junction nine at Wednesbury caused delays although all lanes have since been reopened.

A councillor said he was also concerned a flooded culvert at Senneleys Park in Bartley Green, Birmingham, could be dangerous for members of the public.

Councillor Des Flood, who represents Bartley Green Ward, warned the culvert was 12ft deep and had now flooded to the same level as the adjacent footpaths.

He said it had been reported to the parks department at Birmingham City Council.

Springfield School in Wolverhampton will be shut on Tuesday as part of it became flooded, Wolverhampton City Council said.
