A woman found dead at her home with knife injuries has been named as 74-year-old Anne James.

West Midlands Police said she was found collapsed by a neighbour at about 18:15 GMT on Wednesday in Doveridge Place, Highgate, Walsall.

The force has launched a murder inquiry after she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Det Supt Tom Chisholm described Mrs James' death as "a shocking, violent attack".

"Her family are devastated and can't understand how anyone could do her any harm," he said.

Mrs James' family said: "We are all devastated at the loss of a loving wife, mum, grandma and great grandma. She was an amazing, generous, kind, and much loved part of our family; she will be very sadly missed."

Police added a post mortem examination will take place in "due course".

"We suspect Mrs James was attacked at some stage from late morning to 17:00 GMT yesterday," Det Supt Chisholm said.

"If anyone saw or heard anything suspicious, maybe someone or a vehicle that looked out of place, then I'd urge them to call my team immediately as they could hold vital information."
