Fire broke out at the Wast Hills site in the early hours, said the club

Firefighters rescued Birmingham City players' kits after a fire broke out at the club's training ground.

The blaze broke out at its Wast Hills site on Redhill Road in the early hours of Friday and causing damage.

At its height more than 40 firefighters were involved, although no one is thought to have been injured.

Hereford and Worcester Fire Service said kits hanging in the training room were retrieved so players will be ready for Saturday's trip to Wigan Athletic.

The fire broke out in a single-storey building shortly before 02:30 GMT, said the fire service, with a hydraulic platform and other specialist equipment brought in to help crews.

The incident was being scaled back by 07:30, it added, although firefighters remain at the site damping down.

Staff and players have been contacted and the facility remains closed until further notice, the club said in a statement.
