Developers wanted to build a new 66-bed care home on the former Pelsall FC ground on Walsall Road

An application to build a new 66-bed care home on an old football ground has been rejected.

LNT Care Developments Ltd wanted to use the old Pelsall Villa FC ground in Pelsall, Walsall, to create the facility.

The home would have provided between 50 and 60 new jobs and also would have satisfied a community need, the company added.

But the planning committee at Walsall Council rejected the proposal.

Planning officers stated a number of reasons for the refusal, including the impact on road safety and a failure to mitigate for the loss of a sports pitch.

In the application, developers said the home, proposed for Walsall Road, would provide an "important local support service" and would offer "high quality accommodation".

"The majority of the jobs created at the care home would also be expected to be filled by suitable candidates from the same local area," the application added.

A previous application to build a care home there, and an Aldi Store, was also rejected.
