Nazakat Hussain has been jailed following the incident

A man who sexually assaulted a teenager at a bus stop has been jailed.

Nazakat Hussain attacked the girl as she waited with her younger sister for a National Express bus in Bordesley Green, in August this year.

Hussain, 44, of no fixed address, was convicted of sexual assault by touching and sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to six months in prison.

National Express West Midlands, a major operator of services in the region, welcomed the conviction.

Mark Heffernan, chief operating and safety officer, said incidents of sexual assault on public transport were rare but would not be tolerated.

Mr Hefferman praised the bus driver who called the police, saying his immediate action helped to protect the young girls.

Victim's bravery commended

"This man's arrest and subsequent sentencing sends a clear message that we continue to work to prosecute offenders and make sure they are brought to justice," he said.

Insp Lee Davies commended the girl for her bravery in coming forward to report the attack.

"Her quick actions ensured that Hussain was quickly arrested," he said.

"Hussain showed no remorse and the judge handed out a jail term after he said that he considered the act to be one of a deliberate nature."

In addition to serving the prison term, Hussain has been added to the sex offender's register and must notify police of his residence for a period of seven years after his release.

He was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period of time, restricting any unsupervised access with children under the age of 16.
