Walsall flat fire leaves man dead

A man has been found dead after a fire broke out in a flat in Walsall.

Emergency services were called at just after 04:00 GMT to Wednesbury Road, where a man aged in his 30s was confirmed dead.

A woman who was also at the property was assessed for the effects of smoke inhalation before being discharged.

A cordon remains in place while forensic examinations take place to establish the cause of the fire and how the man died.

West Midlands Fire Service said Wednesbury Road remained closed on Monday afternoon.

Nearby Hillary Primary School took the decision to close for the day but staff said it would reopen on Tuesday.

House to house inquiries are under way and anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police.

An ambulance and a paramedic officer were both called to the scene, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A spokesman said: "On arrival, ambulance staff discovered two patients.

"One of whom, a man, it sadly quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save and he was confirmed dead at the scene."
