BBC Midlands Today's Nick Owen picked up the award at the ceremony on Friday

Presenter Nick Owen has been named best on-screen personality at an awards ceremony.

The BBC Midlands Today presenter picked up the gong at the Royal Television Society Midlands awards, held in Birmingham on Friday.

The 75-year-old presenter recently returned to the daily news programme following treatment for prostate cancer.

He said he was "gobsmacked" to have won the award.

Prostate Cancer UK said it had seen an increase in people accessing its online services after Mr Owen announced his cancer diagnosis.

Speaking about his award, Mr Owen said it was "a fantastic moment".

He said: "I was just overcome with joy and surprise and pleasure, really.

"It was just fantastic, I'm absolutely thrilled."

He will celebrate 50 years of television presenting this month.
