A man has been arrested after two women aged 82 and 76 died in a five-vehicle crash which also left three people injured, including a man in his 90s.
The women died at the scene of the crash, in Ettingshall, Wolverhampton, at about 15:30 GMT on Saturday.
A 90-year-old man remains seriously ill, while two men aged 79 and 78 - all who had been in the same vehicle - were stable, West Midlands Police said.
A man was held on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
Police said the 51-year-old had been in a separate vehicle in the crash, which happened in Millfields Road, and has since been released while inquiries continue.
Det Sgt Paul Hughes said: "This is a particularly sad set of circumstances and our thoughts go out to all of the families affected.
"This collision involved five vehicles and it's important that we piece together what happened in order to provide all those involved the answers they deserve."
He urged people not to speculate on the circumstances of the crash, and asked anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash and who may have dashcam footage of what happened, to come forward.
