New Dudley crossing welcomed after incidents in area
- Published
Campaigners have spoken of their joy, after winning their battle for a new crossing on a busy road in Dudley.
Work is under way to create it on Birmingham New Road between Dudley Canal Trust and the Priory Road Aldi store.
There were seven incidents involving eight casualties on the section of road from 2018 to 2022, according to Crashmap.co.uk.
The new crossing is located close to the junction with Woodcroft Avenue.
Campaigners said the crossing would be welcomed by people walking from the Foxyards Estate to get to nearby Aldi or the Priory Community Centre in Dudley.
Resident Gordon Laird stated there had been "countless times" when he had seen people struggling to get over the road.
He added this included parents "with prams that have been stuck in the middle of the road" while lorries and other vehicles drive past.
Dudley councillor Keiran Casey said the crossing was "fantastic" news.
He said: "I know how concerned residents have been about road safety, and whilst the average speed cameras that we also campaigned and secured on this stretch have slowed traffic down, there was still no crossing point."
Mr Casey said he and fellow councillors had also been lobbying for the crossing.
