Shania Begum admitted she had a sexual relationship with a prisoner at HMP Birmingham

A prison officer has been jailed after admitting having sex with an inmate at a prison.

Shania Begum, 25, from Leegomery, Telford, carried out the inappropriate relationship with the male prisoner at HMP Birmingham.

She took him into private areas of the prison and claimed she was supervising him, West Midlands Police said.

But staff became suspicious and she was caught in the act after an investigation.

Begum pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct in a public office and was jailed for 16 months at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.

She had worked at the Category B prison in Winson Green since December 2018.

When she claimed to be supervising the prisoner, they instead had sex when they could not be seen by other officers or inmates, the force said.

Begum was arrested on 3 October 2022 and refused to answer any questions from detectives.

"The behaviour of Begum clearly erodes the public's trust in her as a prison officer, and she now faces a period of time behind bars," Det Con Adam McHugh said.
