A Birmingham city councillor has pleaded guilty to harassment after charges were brought against him.

Simon Morrall, 34, who represents the Frankley Great Park ward, admitted the offence against a woman at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, and instructed to take part in a rehabilitation programme.

He was also told not to contact the victim after a two-year restraining order was imposed.

The councillor was suspended by the Conservative Party during proceedings, but continued with his ward duties as an independent.

The council's Tory group has been contacted for comment following the conviction, as has the local authority.

In court, Morrall admitted a single charge of pursuing a course of conduct that amounted to harassment of the woman.

A charge of stalking was dismissed.

Morrall was additionally ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £114 and costs of £500.
