Two West Midlands Police officers are under investigation over their use of force on a football fan.

Edward Papas said he was assaulted by officers after a match at Walsall's Bescot Stadium while under escort with away fans from Barrow.

He was arrested for assaulting police after an altercation but cleared by a Wolverhampton court.

Two constables are being investigated for gross misconduct.

Mr Papas, from Manchester, was arrested in March. His court case was heard in January.

He went on to make a complaint about the officers and the IOPC investigation was launched the same month following a referral from West Midlands Police.

Mr Papas told the BBC that he had faith that the IOPC "will do the right thing".

IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said: "Footage from the incident has been circulated in the media and a thorough investigation is being carried out into the officers' use of force, and also complaints that police withheld evidence from the criminal case against Mr Papas.

"We have spoken to him about our work and will continue to provide regular updates. At the end of our investigation we will decide whether the officers have a case to answer in respect of the conduct allegations."
