Staff at Shay's school said she was bright and fun-loving

Ms Kaur spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth and was remanded into custody to next appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday.

She was not required to indicate any plea to the murder charge which alleged she unlawfully killed Shay on Monday.

Tributes including toys and cards have been laid beside the police cordon on Robin Close.

One message at the scene said: "Shay you will be forever missed and always in our thoughts."

Shay attended nearby Brickhouse Primary School where staff described her as bright and fun-loving.

"Our school is deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our children," the school said.

"Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well liked by all and she will be very sadly missed by everyone."

A balloon release was held in Shay's memory on Tuesday.

Jess Sheppard, whose child attended school with Shay, said the youngster did not have a bad bone in her body.

A fundraiser has been set up to raise money for Shay's funeral and more than £3,100 has been pledged.

The organisers said they were members of the Brickhouse community and wanted people in the area to come together after her death.

A cordon was still in place at the house after police were called on Monday at about 12.10 GMT and a post-mortem examination would be held in the future, Det Insp Dan Jarratt said.

"Our thoughts remain with Shay's family and friends. Her tragic death has had a profound impact on those who knew her as well as the wider community," he added.

"We ask that they are left to grieve in private as our enquiries continue."
