Bradford Cathedral has become the first in the north of England to be awarded "eco congregation" status.

Staff and volunteers have been working for three years to lower the building's carbon footprint.

The cathedral has instigated a number of initiatives including installing composters and buying milk in glass bottles.

Canon Andrew Williams said he was thrilled with the award and their work would continue.

The award is given out by the charity Environmental Campaigns and the Environmental Issues Network of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

Canon Williams said: "Gaining this award seals a three-year process of examining carefully our use of natural resources and energy then changing our practice in over 20 different ways.

"In the next phase we will aim to share good eco-practice with neighbouring churches and partner organisations as well as seek ways to generate electricity and so contribute to the National Grid whilst reducing our own carbon footprint."
