Crimewatch appeal over Huddersfield boy's arson death

Relatives of a seven-year-old boy who was killed in an arson attack in Huddersfield 13 years ago have made a television appeal for information.

Joe McCafferty's mother and aunt featured on the BBC's Crimewatch programme on Wednesday.

West Yorkshire Police also asked for help in tracing those responsible for the fire.

Joe died after petrol was poured through the letterbox of a house on Haywood Avenue on 3 May 1997.

It would have been his 21st birthday on 30 October.

Det Supt Dave Pervin, who is leading the investigation into Joe's death, said the force was "as committed as ever" to bringing those responsible for the fire to justice.

"As we approach what would have been his 21st birthday, surely it is time to let Joe rest and let his family have closure.

"To the person responsible, I ask you this - you have had Joe's blood on your hands for more than 13 years now, and I am not sure how you can handle the guilt."
