Halifax's Piece Hall Market to be closed by council

Calderdale Council says it will continue to operate "one-off" markets

Councillors have decided to close a West Yorkshire market, in a move which will save £32,000 a year.

Calderdale Council's Cabinet voted unanimously in favour of closing the Piece Hall Market in Halifax at a meeting earlier.

The council said there had been a decline in the number of traders at the market in the 18th Century cloth hall.

The market is held on Thursdays and Saturdays. The council will continue to run "one-off" markets.

Relocation packages will be offered to affected traders.

The market was temporarily closed in 2006 on health and safety grounds, but reopened following a public campaign.

However the council said it had never been able to attract enough traders back to the site.
