West Yorkshire heroin users warned of 'strong batch'

Drug users in West Yorkshire have been warned of the dangers of a batch of strong heroin, following the deaths of three men in East Lancashire.

Police and NHS Calderdale issued the warning because of fears heroin from the batch responsible for the weekend deaths is in circulation in Yorkshire.

Dr Sophie Egerton, a public health registrar seconded to the police said the risk of an overdose was increased.

Police said said saving lives was their paramount concern.

Bryan Dent, the West Yorkshire Police drugs co-ordinator said: "Drugs have a devastating effect on both individuals and communities.

"We support drug users getting help to assist them to stop using drugs, at the same time we are doing all we can to bring the suppliers of these harmful drugs to justice."

Health agencies have urged anyone who is injecting drugs to contact local services who can provide health care, support and advice.
