A scale model of a fountain which is set to be installed in the centre of Ilkley is being created by a North Yorkshire artist and blacksmith.

The water feature designed by Juliet Gutch will be a 5ft (1.5m) galvanised steel structure which will sit at the top of Brook Street in Ilkley.

Charity Improving Ilkley commissioned James Wilkinson, based near Boroughbridge, to create the model.

It is due to go on display at various locations in the town next month.

The model will be on show at the Tinker Gallery from 4-20 April, when an auction of works by local artists will take place to help fund the finished article.

The team from Improving Ilkley visited Mr Wilkinson's foundry last weekend to see how the model was progressing.

Ms Gutch's design will use a gravity-fed system which will recycle water coming down the hill from Ilkley Moor.

She said the design celebrated the "affinity of sphagnum moss with moorland water" and the connection between the moor and the town below.

Speaking after the visit, she said: "Seeing the scale model somehow brought to life for the first time felt very affirmative for us all.

"James has interpreted the design into a work of art which is technically perfect and has a very organic presence."

Louise Hepworth Wood from Improving Ilkley added: "It is very exciting to see this amazing project progress.

"The completion and delivery of the scale model is a major step forward in this project, and will help the town visualise this installation and how wonderful it will look once in place."
