Bosses at the Abbey Wood defence site near Bristol have said the base is "ready to respond to changes" in the face of plans for a leaner MoD.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox said the MoD was to be reshaped to help tackle Britain's budget deficit.

Abbey Wood houses the ministry's Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) procurement organisation.

A statement said any impact on any specific equipment projects would be announced in due course.

"The strategic defence and security review will define the future shape and role of the Armed Forces and the equipment that they will need," it said.

"Under existing approvals, we will continue to progress equipment projects currently under way but will be ready to respond quickly to any changes in priorities."

Abbey Wood is undergoing an expansion programme and is expected to eventually house more than 10,000 staff.
