Bristol schoolchildren swim English Channel

Six schoolchildren from the Bristol area have swum the English Channel.

The 12-year-olds from Bristol English Channel Swim Team (Best) competed the 21-mile challenge in 13 hours 30 minutes, swimming a section each.

Steven Clarke, whose son Lewis was first in the water, said the final swimmer reached France at 0235 BST.

He said the group had travelled straight back to Dover by boat after completing the challenge and celebrated with tea and croissants.

Best is a Bristol-based community project formed in 2008, with the aim of breaking the world record for the youngest relay team to swim the Channel.

Mr Clarke claimed the group's success meant they had broken the record.
