Bristol city centre gets recycling bins

Recycling bins are being installed around Bristol city centre so people can dispose of their waste in a "green" way while they are out and about.

The bins will be used for recycling newspapers and cans, the most common items pedestrians want to throw away.

In most locations they will replace litter bins, but they will still have a compartment for other rubbish.

The city council said more than 6,000 tonnes of rubbish were collected from the bins and streets last year.

The new bins, sponsored by Metro, are being installed in Park Street, Whiteladies Road, College Green, Baldwin Street, Welsh Back and Stokes Croft.

Similar recycling bins have already been introduced in Broadmead and East Street, Bedminster.

Councillor Gary Hopkins, cabinet member for environment and community safety, said: "This is another initiative to reduce the amount of waste Bristol sends to landfill sites.

"If the council don't look for ways to divert more waste from landfill, and residents don't fully use the recycling services available, then we all face huge financial penalties. Doing nothing is not an option."
