Man charged over murder of newly-wed in South Africa

The couple had been married for two weeks

A man has been charged with the murder of a woman on her honeymoon in South Africa.

Newly-weds Shrien and Anni Dewani, from Bristol, were travelling in a taxi near Cape Town on Saturday when they were kidnapped by armed men.

Mr Dewani was released unharmed, but his wife was found dead in the taxi on Sunday morning.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder and hijacking.

He is due to appear in court in Khayelitsha, a township near Cape Town, on Thursday.

A police spokesman said they were still searching for one other person in connection with the attack.

The couple from Westbury-on-Trym, had been married for two weeks.

Mr Dewani said that on Saturday night, after dinner in a suburb and a walk on the beach, the couple got in a taxi to head back to Cape Town.

He said Mrs Dewani had said she would like to see some of the "real South Africa" and the taxi driver left the motorway and headed towards Gugulethu township.

The plan was simply to drive through but, two miles outside, their vehicle was carjacked by armed men.

The taxi driver and then Mr Dewani were forced from the vehicle.

The car with Mrs Dewani's body inside was found in Khayelitsha on Sunday morning.
