Charity funds cancer scanner for Southmead Hospital

A new scanner which could help detect lung cancer earlier has been installed at Southmead Hospital after a successful money-raising campaign.

The £140,000 needed to buy the endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) machine was raised by North Bristol NHS Trust charity Shine Together.

The charity was launched in April and this is its first major purchase.

Dr Andrew Medford, consultant chest physician, said the hospital was "incredibly grateful" for the scanner.

Trevor Reid, from Shine Together, said: "This is our first significant purchase of equipment since [the charity] was launched in April and it is thanks to the support of many local people that we are able to make this donation."
