Police arrest 10 people at Bristol tuition fee protest

Police made 10 arrests after more than 2,000 people in Bristol protested against plans to increase university tuition fees.

The demonstrators assembled on College Green at 1100 GMT before marching towards the Broadmead shopping area.

The protesters, who lit flares during the march, then walked to the M32 before returning to College Green.

An attempt by police to block the protesters in at College Green failed with students continuing their march.

'Public order'

BBC reporter Richard Greenaway said the atmosphere was good natured.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The majority of people taking part were well behaved but 10 people were arrested for minor public order offences.

"There is a small minority who are potentially damaging the reputation of those genuinely trying to make their voices heard."

Those present at the march included students from the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

A week ago 2,000 students gathered for a march which ended at the University of Bristol's Wills Building.
