A new road which links the A38 near the Royal Mail depot at Filton to the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre in South Gloucestershire has opened.

It is hoped the mile-long (1.6km) Hayes Way will relieve congestion normally experienced over the festive period.

The dual carriageway has been built by Bovis Homes as part of planning consent for the Charlton Hayes housing development.

It is hoped it will ease pressure on the Cribbs Causeway junction of the M5.

"The new road is an important part of South Gloucestershire's infrastructure and will provide an alternative route between the shopping and leisure facilities at Cribbs Causeway and the housing and employment centres at Filton," council spokesman said.

"The road is being opened at a crucial time for Cribbs Causeway, the traffic can get congested at this time of year and this is all part of the council's efforts to ensure the roads are as clear as possible for Christmas."
