Bristol's new £27m M Shed museum will open on 17 June, two years later than initially planned.

The harbourside attraction was due to open in July 2009 at a cost of £19m, but that increased when tests showed the land was contaminated with lead.

Museum staff will spend the next few months moving thousands of items into the building's three new galleries.

It has been built on the site of the former Industrial Museum in Prince's Wharf on Wapping Road.

The M Shed is being billed by Bristol City Council as "the city's flagship museum" with objects and stories illustrating the city's past.

It will also house working exhibits outside, including steamboats, trains and cranes.

There is also a new cafe that will open out onto a public square.

The museum was given the name M Shed after a 1950s transit shed which occupied the site.
