Street lights in Bradley Stoke will be switched off for five hours a night

Street lights across Bradley Stoke are to be switched off for five hours a night from April to save money.

Bradley Stoke Town Council carried out a consultation where 54% of people who responded supported the plans, while a further 23% suggested amendments.

Areas which have a history of night-time accidents, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings will not be included in the scheme.

The switch-off will save about 40% on both energy costs and carbon emissions.

Ben Walker, the town's Conservative mayor, said they had taken up the offer of turning off the lights after South Gloucestershire Council proposed the scheme to parish councils.

He said that opinions had been noted during the consultation and added they would act on feedback from the consultation.

"Any comment, any concern that we could actually pinpoint in a road - or a street lamp in question - we have fed that straight back to South Gloucestershire Council."

Mike Birkin, from Friends of the Earth, said that the move would be good for the environment.

"We have to start from the position that this is a double win for the council - it will save them money and reduce their carbon emissions," he said.
