Work to restore Tyntesfield Estate aviary starts

The aviary was built between 1867 and 1883 as a home for exotic birds

Work has started to restore the dilapidated Victorian aviary at Tyntesfield Estate in North Somerset.

The bird house, located in the formal gardens, is one of the smallest buildings on the National Trust estate.

Built between 1867 and 1883 as a home for exotic birds, it was later used as a children's playhouse.

The funds to have it restored were raised in a raffle for visitors to the estate.

A National Trust spokeswoman said the building was a "rare surviving example of a Victorian country house aviary".

The project is expected to take 10 weeks to complete.
