Picnic to celebrate Bristol Downs 150th anniversary

A Victorian-themed picnic event has been organised as part of celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Bristol's Downs.

In 1861 an Act of Parliament was signed to protect Clifton Downs and Durdham Downs to keep the area from development for the people of Bristol.

People coming to Sunday's event were encouraged to wear Victorian costumes to add to the atmosphere.

Other attractions included music, storytelling, theatre and crafts.

Organiser Vicky Abel said the Downs played a special role in the culture and life of city residents.

She said: "For years The Downs have become a place for people to get together and have fun. It could be a football match, people out walking the dog, children flying a kite or fun runners raising hundreds of pounds for charity.

"The celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Downs are a chance for us all to say 'thank you' to those who have looked after - and continue to look after - The Downs and ensure The Downs remain a green jewel in the city's crown."
