Cafe culture causing Weston pedestrians problems

A plan to create an alfresco cafe culture in Weston-super-Mare is causing pedestrians problems, a council has said.

Cafes along Regent Street were granted 12 month licences by North Somerset Council for outdoor seating.

But the council said the plan had led to congestion on the road.

Elfan Ap Rees, the council's deputy leader, said the problem only affected a few cafes in the town but it was making walking "extremely difficult".

"The licences we granted were only for 12 months anyway and we always knew we might have to re-look at some of the areas to make sure that people weren't inconvenienced."

Mr Ap Rees added that the problem did not affect cafes in the new Pier Square area.
