Taylor Wimpey Keynsham development inquiry starts

An inquiry into plans to build 285 new homes on greenbelt land near Bristol is due to start.

The building firm Taylor Wimpey also wanted to put shops and offices on the site in Keynsham.

Planning officers had recommended that Bath and North East Somerset Council approve the plans but councillors rejected it.

The Planning Inspectorate is due to decide on the scheme during an appeal which will last until 17 June.

The plans sparked protests by residents who said the access road was "inadequate".

But a spokesman for Taylor Wimpey said the Highways Agency had ruled access to the homes was acceptable.

"Taylor Wimpey is hopeful of a positive outcome to this appeal of the decision by members to refuse the original application," the spokesman said.

"This would see investment in Keynsham assist the local economy by providing much-needed affordable housing for local families, employment opportunities and the wider community benefits highlighted."

The inquiry is taking place at the Fry's Club in Keynsham.
